Sizing a Construction Job

A single-room remodel or a small addition often fits a 15 yard container. A whole-house renovation, a bathroom-and-kitchen combo, or a mid-size addition tends to land closer to a 20 yard. A new-construction build or a larger renovation does better in a 30 yard, so the crew isn’t scheduling a second drop-off halfway through framing. Permits: Job Site vs. Street

A container that sits entirely on the job site — driveway, yard, or gravel pad — needs no permit anywhere in our service area, and that covers most construction drop-offs. Street placement is a different matter. Inside Nashua city limits, that’s handled by the City’s own Board of Public Works under City Code Ch. 285 (Streets & Sidewalks); call the Board directly to confirm current requirements and any applicable fee. Hillsborough and Rockingham counties have no land-use or right-of-way permitting authority at all, so in Hudson, Merrimack, Milford, Amherst, Hollis, Brookline, Pelham, Litchfield, Londonderry, or Windham, that town’s own select board or public works department handles it instead — never a county office. In Tyngsborough, Dunstable, and Pepperell across the Massachusetts line, the town runs its own process the same way, with MassDEP as the relevant state environmental agency rather than NHDES. What Belongs in a Construction Roll-Off

Framing lumber, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and general job-site debris are all standard in a construction container. A few categories need separate handling: asbestos is never permitted in any roll-off, anywhere, and always requires a licensed abatement contractor. Old electronics with a screen over 4 inches, computer monitors, and CPUs are barred from New Hampshire landfills under an NHDES ban, and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries — the kind inside cordless power tools — have been banned from the trash statewide since July 1, 2025, covering job sites as well as households, because a punctured battery pack is a real fire risk in a collection truck. Paint, fuel, motor oil, and other chemicals are standard prohibited items on any job site as well. Scheduling Around Winter Ice

The Merrimack Valley has a genuine winter ice-storm risk, and the December 11–12, 2008 ice storm is the benchmark event for New Hampshire — more than 400,000 customers lost power statewide, roughly five times worse than the January 1998 ice storm, with restoration taking over two weeks in some areas and Hillsborough County heavily affected. Roughly December through March is when ice storms and nor’easters are the real scheduling risk for a job site — heavy ice accumulation, downed limbs and lines, and hazardous roads.
